More on Mikhail Gorbachev's Ubben Lecture

mikhail gorbachev.jpgOctober 25, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Streaming video and audio of Mikhail Gorbachev's Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture at DePauw University, which begins at 4 p.m. this Thursday, October 27, will be available via the Internet live and for 24 hours after the speech. "Given that so many people who live a long distance away -- especially alumni -- have expressed regret that they won't be able to make the trip to Greencastle, Mr. Gorbachev is allowing us to present his remarks over the Internet live and in real-time, which is a first," says Ken Owen '82, director of media relations at DePauw and coordinator of the Ubben Lecture Series. "This will provide a way for many, many more people to enjoy what promises to be an extraordinary event."

Gorbachev's speech, "Security and Environment: The Challenges of the 21st Century," will take place in the Lilly Center, 702 South College Avenue (directions and parking information). Doors open at 3 p.m. As with all Ubben Lectures, the address by the former leader of the Soviet Union and Nobel Peace Prize laureate is free and open to the public; seating is first come, first served. No tickets are required (see complete list of past Ubben Lecturers by clicking here).

Should the 3,000 seats in the Lilly Center fill to capacity, overflow seating will be available at Kresge Auditorium of the Performing Arts Center, which is acrossGorbachev Reagan.jpg the street from the venue. A closed-circuit television feed will be provided in Kresge.

Questions for President Gorbachev are being accepted at this e-mail address. DePauw student journalists will present questions to the speaker in the question-and-answer session that will follow his lecture.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev served as leader of the Soviet Union from 1985-1991. He is world-renowned and admired for streamlining and decentralizing the oppressive system he inherited. In an effort to secure relations with the West, Gorbachev signed two broad disarmament pacts, and ended Communist rule in Eastern Europe.

Gorbachev is writing a new speech for his DePauw appearance, one that will address the fragility of our world -- as demonstrated by the recent hurricanes -- and the new challenges we face from terrorism.
