Tigers grab three-point win at Rhodes

December 4, 2005, Memphis, Tenn. - Ryan Werntz knocked down a three with 1:30 remaining and Mike Moore hit two free throws with 26.9 seconds left to lift DePauw to a 63-60 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at Rhodes.

Rhodes guard Rami Almefty's three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out as DePauw improved to 3-4 overall an 1-1 in the SCAC. Rhodes dropped to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Rhodes opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 41-31 advantage. The Tigers still trailed by seven at 55-48 after Joey Daly's basket with 6:05 left, but scored the next six to close to within one with just over four minutes left.

Alex Stewart gave the Tigers the lead at 57-56 with a three-pointer at the 3:40 mark and Stephen Schott hit a free throw with 3:05 remaining to push the lead to 58-56.

Matthew Jakes tied the game at 58-58 with 2:36 left before Daly hit two free throws with 1:54 remaining to give Rhodes the lead, 60-58.

Werntz, a sophomore who had scored two collegiate points previously, knocked down the eventual game-winner at the 1:30 mark to make it 61-60. Rhodes missed on a chance to regain the lead before Moore knocked down his two free throws after Austin Brown grabbed an offensive rebound.

Schott posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Moore added 18 and Alex Stewart followed with 13. Jakes paced the Lynx with 21 points with Almefty adding 12 and Daly 11. DePauw outrebounded Rhodes 40-26.

The Tigers host Illinois Institute of Technology on Thursday.
