Musical Outreach of Three DePauw Students Highlighted in Indianapolis Star
February 8, 2006
February 8, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - A series of concerts at five Brownsburg, Indiana elementary schools last Friday "featured three DePauw University students who specialize in playing the viola, violin, cello and string bass. They joined the tour because next school year Brownsburg will begin offering instruction in stringed instruments." The students, who played alongside sixth graders from Brownsburg, were Sonja Emberg, Jackie Norris and Jill Turner. DePauw's participation in the program is noted in the Indianapolis Star.
"Fostering enthusiasm is the purpose of the performance, part of the annual recruitment tour for the band program," writes Tania E. Lopez. "DePauw student Jill Turner, 21, St. Louis, demonstrated her viola and violin skills. 'I love it,' Turner said. 'I want to be a music teacher, so I've always (done) this to recruit high schoolers to play.'"
The new string program at Brownsburg Schools will be led by Courtney Keeth, a 1999 DePauw music education graduate. "Courtney was asked to start a string program in the Brownsburg schools next year and needed some help in setting up some recruitment performances at the school system's elementary schools," says Craig T. Paré,
associate professor of music at DePauw and director of the DePauw University Band. "I replied that I knew of some wonderful string music education majors who might like to help, and my first thought was to contact Sonja Emberg, an outstanding future string teacher. Sonja, Jill, and Jackie took it from there, and volunteered their time and talents to help Courtney begin to build her string program."
