John Tedstrom '84 is Executive Director of Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS

Tedstrom III, a 1984 graduate of DePauw University, has been appointed executive director of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC). Dr. Tedstrom is the founder of Transatlantic Partners Against AIDS (TPAA) and served as its president and CEO until last month, when the GBC and TPAA initiated a process that will join the two organizations.

Over the last three years, the Coalition has grown from 17 companies to include over 200 companies worldwide that are dedicated to meeting the challenges of the AIDS pandemic through access to the business sector's unique skills and expertise.

"By bringing John Tedstrom to the GBC, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership as founder and president of TPAA and initiating the union of our two organizations, we will propel the GBC and the business fight against AIDS to the next level," says Richard Holbrooke, the GBC's president and CEO and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "TPAA’s work in Russia and Ukraine, including its strong business programs, are innovative examples of best practices that have resonance and value in other regions, especially Africa. Before founding TPAA in July 2003, Tedstrom served as vice president for policy studies and vice president for global security at the EastWest Institute (EWI). In those positions, he was responsible for conceptualizing and building new programs, recruiting staff, securing funding, and implementing projects in the U.S., Western Europe,and the New Independent States. While at EWI, John conceived and co-founded the U.S.-Russia Working Group Against HIV/AIDS. Prior to joining EWI, Tedstrom served as director for Russian, Ukrainian, and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council, where he provided policy advice and strategic planning for President Clinton and managed interagency coordination East College Leaves Spring 06.jpgof priority foreign policy issues in the region. Prior to that, he worked for nearly a decade at the RAND Corporation, where he rose to the rank of senior economist.

John Tedstrom held the Jacyk Chair at Columbia University's School of International & Public Affairs in 2000-01, and is the author of dozens of publications, journal articles and book chapters.

An economics major at DePauw, Tedstrom earned his master's in that discipline from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in economics and Russian Area Studies from the University of Birmingham, England. He serves on the Board of the International Center for Policy Studies (Kyiv).
