Advocate Guide: DePauw One of America's Most Welcoming & Inclusive Campuses
September 17, 2006
September 17, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - Describing DePauw as "an LGBT-progressive choice in the rural area of Greencastle, Indiana," the new Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students ranks the University among America's best 100 campuses for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. "This religiously affiliated Methodist campus has demonstrated a commitment to LGBT that deserves to be noted," writes Shane L. Windmeyer.
The book states, "DePauw is among the first colleges in the state to include both sexual orientation and gender identity/expression as a protected class in campus policies, this campus has been out front as leader with many LGBT-inclusive policies and practices."
The text notes the organization United DePauw, and that the University established an office for LGBT services in 1999. "DePauw University has unquestionably made a commitment to LGBT-inclusiveness," Windmeyer asserts.
An unidentified DePauw student is quoted in the book as saying, "I feel safe and have found acceptance for who I am on this campus; I did not have that in high school. DePauw represents a 'bubble' of gay-friendliness, unlike the rest of of Indiana."
