Debaters Make Strong Showing at Illinois Tournament
October 10, 2006October 10, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University's debate team enjoyed a successful opening weekend of competition at the Jack Parker Invitational Debate Tournament, hosted by Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. The DePauw first-year team of Nikki Miyasato (Honolulu, HI) and Aaron Dicker (Fort Wayne, IN) was champion of the novice division in October 6-8 tournament, defeating Temple University in the final debate on a 3-2 decision. DePauw’s varsity team of Tyler Kennedy (Windsor, CO) and Michael Lutz (Lexington, KY) advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Teams competing in the event included: Temple, Wheaton, Loyola, Marquette, and the varsity division champion, Hillsdale College.
David Worthington, instructor of communication and theatre and assistant coach of the debate team, noted that the event marked the first collegiate competition for Miyasato and Dicker and that their early success is "unusual" and "exciting for the future of DePauw debate."
