"Decker received his bachelor of arts in social justice from DePauw University [in 1972] and his master's and doctorate degrees in criminology from Florida State University. Prior to coming to ASU West, Decker was a curator's professor and chair of the department of criminology at the University of Missouri - St. Louis for 15 years."

"Our lab is the community and you are our partners," Decker said at the dedication of the school. "We need to work together to be successful in helping communities be sustainable, productive and safe places."

He hopes the new school can make a positive difference in the areas of gun violence, youth crime and prisoner re-entry. "With great opportunity comes great responsibility," he stated.
