Sakel's buzzer-beater lifts 22nd-ranked Tigers to win at Kenyon

December 20, 2006, Gambier, Ohio - Senior guard Reid Sakel buried a 23-foot three-pointer at the buzzer and lifted 22nd-ranked DePauw to a 53-52 win at Kenyon. The Tigers picked up their seventh straight win and improved to 8-1, while the Lords dropped to 5-6.
Josh Klinger gave Kenyon a 52-50 lead on a layup with six seconds left and, after the teams alternated timeouts, DePauw's Mike Moore got the ball to Sakel who nailed the shot from behind the top of the key.
It was a game of runs as the Tigers took an early 13-3 lead and still led 20-14 before the Lords ran off eight straight points to take a 22-20 lead. DePauw went to the break with a 27-25 lead.
The Tigers pushed the lead to 36-29 after Ryan Werntz knocked down a three with 14:09 left, but Kenyon again battled back with eight straight to take a 37-36 advantage on David Jolson's bucket with 9:19 remaining.
Sakel hit a jumper with 5:07 left that capped a 10-2 run and gave DePauw a 46-39 advantage, but Kenyon knotted the score at 46-46 with a 7-0 run over the next 1:16.
The teams exchganged baskets and then free throws before Klinger's basket.
DePauw shot just 39.6 percent from the floor, but Kenyon only managed 31.6 percent. Kenyon also outrebounded the Tigers 43-31 and grabbed 18 on the offensive glass.
Brown paced the Tigers with 18 points, while Sakel added 14 and Stephen Schott grabbed 10 rebounds. Korey Haddox led Kenyon with 14 points, while Bryan Yelvington and Dave Knapke each grabbed eight for the Lords.
DePauw returns to action on Thursday, December 29, when they face the University of Dallas in the second game of the Tampa Bay Shootout. DePauw serves as the host school for the tournament and both of the Tigers' games can be heard on WGRE.Back
