MUSO Magazine Spotlights DePauw Percussion Ensemble's European Tour
February 8, 2007
February 8, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - The current issue of MUSO magazine offers a look at DePauw University's Percussion Ensemble which spent "three weeks of their Winter Term touring Central and Eastern Europe, performing almost exclusively on instruments provided by the cities they visit." The half-page feature includes the photo is seen at the top of this summary.
"Percussion ensembles aren't exactly mobile," DePauw School of Music Professor Amy Lynn Barber tells the magazine. Dr. Barber, who directs the Percussion Ensemble, adds, "This is rather rare. I don't know if we're the first, but we're one of the few" to use local instruments when performing and traveling abroad, which reduces hassles and eliminates large shipping costs.
The text notes that the January tour took Barber and her students to Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. "Barber got to know all these lands rather well during 12 years traveling the region as a Fulbright Scholar and later as a professional musician."
Tour highlights, the magazine notes, included "a live radio broadcast in Slovenia and an appearance in Martinu Hall in Prague's Lichtenstein Palace," and it refers to "the profound musical effects" the trip was bound to have on the group.
