President Bottoms Joins Statement on British Boycott of Israeli Educational Institutions
August 9, 2007
August 9, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University's Robert G. Bottoms has joined a group of American college presidents who are publicly denouncing Britain's new University and College Union (UCU) boycott of Israeli educational institutions. Dr. Bottoms and the other educational leaders are endorsing a statement by Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia University, who says, "I find this idea utterly antithetical to the fundamental values of the academy, where we will not hold intellectual exchange hostage to the political disagreements of the moment."
"A free exchange of ideas in the international marketplace is critical," says President Bottoms, who has led DePauw since 1986 and is entering his final year in office before assuming the role of Chancellor of the University. "Freedom of ideas and freedom of expression are key tenets of a quality educational experience. DePauw has a long history of sending its students abroad to study, and has a strong commitment to attracting more international matriculants to study here in Greencastle. There is great value in embracing the world and all of its diversity; there is great danger in placing barriers to opportunity because of political considerations."
More than 300 college and university presidents have now endorsed Bollinger's statement, "Boycott Israeli Universities? Boycott Ours, Too!"
