DePauw Cyclists Take Third at National Championships

2007 omnium.jpgSeptember 17, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University's cycling team finished third at this weekend's USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships Division II Team Omnium. In addition, DePauw's Rita Klofta, Abigail Dean and Erin Whitmore finished third, fourth and fifth among Division II women. The event was hosted by the University of California-San Diego. United States Military Academy won the team event with 864 points. Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished second with 578, while DePauw's 398 points were good for third place. 2007 Cycling Team Sprint Small.jpg

Rita Klofta opened competition Friday with a 5th place overall finish in the 2-kilometer individual pursuit. On Saturday, DePauw's team of Dean, Klofta and Whitmore finished fourth overall in the women’s team sprint. (at right: Whitmore, Dean, Klofta)

Kent Menzel, professor of communication and theatre, serves as the cycling team's coach and faculty adviser. He says, "Klofta's fifth in the 2K was an absolutely stunning result and places her among the fastest young women in the nation." On Saturday, DePauw's team of Dean, Klofta and Erin Whitmore finished fourth in the women’s team sprint.
