Prof Kent Mecum.jpgJanuary 5, 1976, Greencastle, Ind. - A new book, tracing the life and accomplishments of Spanish American statesman Vicente Rocafuerte, has just been published by Kent B. Mecum, assistant professor of romance languages at DePauw University. The Practical Idealism of Vicente Rocafuerte is available in Puebla, Mexico, and is the second work by Dr. Mecum to appear in Spanish in Latin America.

The professor's book, which grew out of a doctoral dissertation, is aimed at three audiences: Spanish American intellectuals who provided the author material on the subject, Ecuadorian and Mexican students, and U.S. Latin American specialists who wish to broaden their Old DePauw Gold EC Logo.jpgknowledge in the area.

Rocafuerte (1783-1847) was a knight-errant of Spanish American independence, serving the cause in Europe and North America. An enlightened humanitarian, he worked actively for penal, social, religious and educational reform. He served as president of Ecuador for four years and was also Mexican minister to London.

Last October, Mecum was elected president of the Midwest Association of Latin American Studies. Read more in this previous story.
