Dayton Philharmonic to Celebrate 75th Anniversary with Prof. Jim Beckel's Fantasy
January 6, 2008January 6, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - "The piece that will open the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's pair of Classical Concerts this week is entitled Fantasy after Schubert," begins an article in today's Dayton Daily News. "The 11-minute work by James A. Beckel Jr. might also be subtitled 'to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the orchestra playing it.' Commissioned in 2004 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the piece will be played by the Dayton Philharmonic at the beginning of its own 75th year."
Carol Simmons goes on to note that Beckel "is the principal trombonist for the Indianapolis Symphony, in addition to serving on the music faculties at DePauw University and the University of Indianapolis."
The concerts will take place Thursday and Saturday at the Schuster Center. Professor Beckel will present a talk an hour before each of the concerts.
