BET's History Makers: Courage to Feature Vernon Jordan '57

Vernon Jordan Classroom.jpgJanuary 25, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - Vernon Jordan, legendary civil rights figure and 1957 graduate of DePauw University, will be featured in History Makers: Courage. The program will premiere on Sunday, February 24, at noon (eastern time) on BET as part of the network's celebration of Black History Month.

A synopsis of the show states: "Through the revealing personal stories of influential African-Americans such as Nikki Giovanni, Vernon Jordan, Angela Davis, Harry Belafonte, and many others, viewers are shown the importance of following your own path and standing up for what you believe in despite the opposition or consequences."

An advisory member of DePauw's Board of Trustees, Vernon Jordan served as president of the National Urban League and served as an adviser to Presidents Clinton and Carter. He also authored the memoir, Vernon Can Read!. Jordan is currently senior counsel at the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and senior managing director of the investment firm Lazard Fréres & Co. LLC.

Jordan is among those featured in the documentary, The Black List, which was featured at the Sundance Film Festival this month.

He will deliver the spring convocation address at the University of Texas at Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs on May 17.
