September 5, 2008

Bro-Fowler-Duo.jpgSeptember 5, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw University School of Music will welcome its first guest artist, The Bro-Fowler Duo, on Monday, September 15. The duo will present a master class at 3 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. Both events will take place in Thompson Recital Hall of the Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts and are free and open to the public.

During the past nine years, the Bro-Fowler Duo has performed throughout the United States, including performances in Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbia (S.C.), Minneapolis, Tucson and New York City. Formed in 1998 for performances of Edison Denisov's Sonate for Alto Saxophone and Cello, saxophonist Paul Bro and cellist Kurt Fowler have sought to expand the repertoire for this unusual combination of instruments by commissioning new works.

Since the fall of 2000, they have been the recipients of four Indiana State University Arts Endowment grants, resulting in new works for alto saxophone and cello by outstanding composers: Bid Call by Libby Larsen, Walking on Water by Dorothy Green Center Dusk.jpgChang, Temple Fair by Chinese composer Zhou Long, and most recently a new commission for January 2009 by Augusta Read Thomas.

The Monday night performance will feature works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Wolfram Wagner, Zhou Long, Dorothy Chang, Antonio Vivaldi, and Libby Larsen.

The School of Music will host a large number of guests this year, covering a large span of instrumental areas. For more information about DePauw School of Music events and guest artists, visit its Web page.
