UNRWA's Karen Koning AbuZayd '63 Visits Syria

October 13, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - Karen Koning AbuZayd, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and 1963 graduate of DePauw University, today begins a four-day visit to Syria. Her schedule will and she will launch UNRWA's "Violence-Free Schools" campaign in Syria, "and open new school buildings in Homs and Khan Eshieh camps. She will also promote field efforts to enhance employability and economic self-sufficiency of refugees and brief donors and UN agencies on UNRWA's operations and latest challenges region-wide," notes an announcement.
UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to over 4.6 million registered refugees living in the Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.
