March 22, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The 2008 winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award, Ander Monson, will visit DePauw University on Wednesday, April 15, as a guest of the James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series. Monson's 7:30 p.m. reading will take place in the auditorium of the Richard E. Peeler Art Center. The event is presented free of admission charge and is open to all.
Monson was honored with the GLCA Award as well as the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize for Neck Deep and Other Predicaments, a collection of essays that uses forms such as the index, the Harvard Outline, and the mathematical proof, to explore subjects from the history of mining in northern Michigan to his experiences at Cranbrook boarding school near Detroit.
"For Monson the essay is something like a schematics for our fiercest longings and most ecstatic inventions," writes Robert Polito.
Of the author's fiction debut, Other Electricities, Publishers Weekly opined, "Monson's is an original new voice, and this poignant, lyrical collection conjures a powerful sense of place.
Monson also authored the poetry collection Vacationland.
