Tigers Complete Weekend Sweep at Millsaps

sb040108.jpgMarch 22, 2009, Jackson, Miss. —  DePauw, ranked 16th in Division III, wrapped up its opening Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend with a series sweep at Millsaps.

The Tigers took both ends of today's twinbill by scores of 5-3 and 10-2. DePauw improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference with the wins and extended its SCAC regular season win streak to 22, while the Majors dropped to 7-12 overall and 0-4 in the SCAC.

In the first game, Millsaps took a 2-0 lead in the first as Jennifer McKinley doubled home Tiffany Ladnier from first before Kasey Thibodeaux doubled scoring McKinley.

The Tigers were held scoreless until the fifth when Carolyn Bartlett led off with an infield single and moved to second on Rachel MacBeth's sacrifice. Chelsy Patterson doubled and Bartlett moved to thrid. Brianne Weeks reached on an infield error which allowed Bartlett to score. Patterson later scored on a passed ball.

DePauw followed with three more in the sixth as Jennifer Kosinski led off with a double and moved to third on Kelly Schwerzler's one-out single. Bartlett reached on an error with Kosinksi scoring the go-ahead run and Schwerzler advancing to third. Patterson delivered another double scoring Bartlett and Kosinksi and giving the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

Millsaps' final run came in the bottom of the sixth as Thibodeaux hit a leadoff homer to left

Patterson led the Tigers with three of their nine hits and drove in a pair, while Weeks followed with two hits. Ladnier had three of the Majors' seven hits, while Thibodeaux had a pair and drove in two.

Megan Soultz improved to 9-2 with the win, while Lindsay Drane suffered the loss and dropped to 0-2.

DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap as Ashlee Anton led off with a single and moved to second on Schwerzler's sacrifice bunt. Anton moved to third on a passed ball ans scored on Bartlett's single. Patterson banged a two-out double before Weeks followed with a single that scored Bartlett.

Thibodeaux hit a leadoff homer in the second to cut the margin in half, but the Tigers added five in the fifth as Rachel Gill drove in the first two with a single. Minx then stole home as part of a double-steal with Gill taking second. Barlett drove in the final two runs of the frame with a triple to right.

In the sixth, Weeks tripled and scored on Minx's sacrifice fly before the Majors countered in the bottom half of the inning with Thibodeaux's single and Ladner's run-scoring double. DePauw added the game's final runs in the seventh on and RBI single by Lauren Rees and Holly Paris' run-scoring double.

The Tigers totaled 13 hits paced by Weeks with three and two each from Patterson, Gill and Bartlett. Bartlett drove in three in the win. Thibodeaux and Jenny Laird each had two of the Majors' seven hits.

Soultz improved to 10-2 with the win as she allowed just five hits in five innings. Thibodeaux dropped to 3-6 with the loss.

DePauw travels to the University of Texas-Tyler for a Tuesday doubleheader against the third-ranked Patriots.
