May 31, 2009
May 31, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — "Tom Chiarella, a Greencastle resident and writer for Esquire magazine, was part of a team that earned a 2009 national award from The American Society of Magazine Editors," notes Cathy Kightlinger's column in today's Indianapolis Star. Chiarella, visiting professor of creative writing at DePauw University and fiction editor for the magazine, was honored for a feature, "The Esquire Almanac of Steak," which was honored in the Leisure Interests category.
"As part of the package, Chiarella spent time working at Kincaid's Meat Market, 5605 N. Illinois St., and wrote about it," notes Kightlinger. Chiarella says of his experience learning to be a butcher, "I came away thinking, ‘This is just a good oldschool craft.'"
