February 3, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — "I have always wanted to help young men and women reach their potential and give them the tools to be successful in their lives," says Steve Yaros, who teaches world history at the Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center. A 2003 graduate of DePauw University, Yaros is the subject of the Indianapolis Star's "Meet the Teacher" feature.
Asked what goals he has for his students, Yaros responds, "To have a dream and to have a goal of what they want for their future. Big or small, dreams/goals are what drive all of us every day to get out of bed. This is a tough thing for some ninth-graders to figure out. For a 14- or 15-year-old to set goals for their future 10 years from now can be difficult for a teacher to get out of them. However, if you can talk with your students, encourage their hobbies, their extracurricular activities and be there for them as someone who they can trust, you would be amazed at the dreams and goals they set for themselves."
A history major at DePauw, Yaros' profile notes that he was an extra in the movie Rudy. He serves as an assistant coach for Ben Davis High School's boy's track & field team and is head coach of the school's freshman football team.
