June 7, 2010

Walter Lenckos.jpgJune 7, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Walter J. Lenckos is the new superintendent of Porter County, Indiana's Department of Parks and Recreation. "The 33-year-old Bolingbrook, Ill., native originally earned a degree in English composition from DePauw University in 1999 and worked sales for Riverside Publishing in Itasca, Ill.," notes a story in the Gary Post-Tribune which credits a DePauw experience for changing Lenckos' life path.

James D. Wolf Jr. writes, "In college, a housemate took him canoeing overnight. 'I just got absolutely hooked on it. I fell asleep listening to the owls,' Lenckos said. That inspired him to volunteer after college with the Sierra Club's River Prairie Group in DuPage, County, Ill."

Lenckos eventually earned a master's degree in recreation administration from Aurora University in Illinois.  For the past five years, he's worked for Outward Bound in Baltimore and served as the organization's interim executive director last year.

"I'm sure whatever I'm thinking and seeing right now is going to be different from what I'm thinking and seeing in 90 days," Lenckos says of his new job. "There's so much information."
