Brad Brownell '91 Preparing for First Season Leading Clemson Hoops Program

July 16, 2010

Brad Brownell 2010-3.jpgJuly 16, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — "Brownell played at DePauw," notes an article on Clemson University head men's basketball coach Brad Brownell, posted this afternoon at ESPN's Web site. "He wasn't a household name as a player, nor as a coach. But the rep on him was clear: He can coach regardless of the level. He took both UNC Wilmington and Wright State to the NCAA tournament."

Andy Katz's story asks, "Can Clemson take it to the next level?" Brownell, a 1991 graduate of DePauw University, was named the Tigers' head coach on April 13.

"His teams always play hard," says Brad Stevens, head men's basketball coach at Butler University and 1999 DePauw graduate, whose Bulldog teams compete with Wright State in the Horizon League. "They cut as hard as any team on the offensive end and they can really, really defend you on every possession. They don't take plays off. He's a basketball guy and the impression is he's a really good coach, a really good guy and does things the right way. He's not a huge self-promoter, which is why his teams do well. His concern is to put good teams on the floor."
