DePauw Opens 123rd Football Season Tomorrow

September 10, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw takes to the gridiron for the beginning of its 123rd season of intercollegiate football when it hosts Rose-Hulman on Saturday, September 11. Kickoff from Blackstock Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
The Tigers are coming off a 7-3 season which included a 5-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record and an SCAC co-championship. DePauw also made the program’s first NCAA postseason appearance. The Tigers were ranked 25th in the USA Today Sports Weekly Division III Preseason poll and currently are receiving votes in the D3football.com Top 25 Poll.
Rose-Hulman was 6-4 last year which marked its fourth straight winning season. The Engineers started the season with two wins and finished with three straight victories. The four losses came by a total of just 18 points and none by more than seven.
DePauw leads the all-time series 39-13-1 and the squads are meeting for the first time since 2005 when the Tigers took a 60-21 victory in Terre Haute to clinch a share of the SCAC title. DePauw won the last game played in Greencastle by a 30-3 score in 2004, while Rose-Hulman’s last win in the series was in 2003 by a 22-12 count.
The two squads first met in 1894 with DePauw claiming a 26-0 victory. They played each other from 1989 through 1997 as members of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and from 1998 through 2005 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Today’s game is the first time since 1984 that they’ve squared off as non-conference opponents.
