Tigers Among "Little Guys" Administering Preseason Basketball Shockers
November 10, 2010
November 10, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — "Two Saturdays ago, what’s expected to be a much-improved Evansville team lost to non-scholarship DePauw," notes a column in Indiana's Evansville Courier & Press. Noting other recent games in which Division II and III schools have shocked D-I programs, Tim Ethridge asks, "What in the name of James Naismith is going on with these college basketball exhibitions? Aren’t they designed for a big guy to beat up on a little guy, producing positive vibes for the big guy’s fans and some cash flow for the little guy’s athletic department?"
Besides DePauw's 66-62 defeat of Evansville on October 30, "Last week, Xavier, coached by former UE player Chris Mack and picked second in the Atlantic 10, lost at home to Division II Bellarmine," writes Ethridge. "On Monday night, No. 23-ranked Tennessee was taken to task on its homecourt by D-II Indianapolis. Meantime, in Bloomington, Indiana trailed Division II Ferris State by 13 points with under seven minutes to go, and needed a four-point play and a waved-off game-winner to survive."
