Strong Second Half Lifts #10 Tigers to Victory

November 26, 2010, Thousand Oaks, Calif. — DePauw trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but shot over 61 percent in the second half and took a 76-61 win over La Verne at the Cal Lutheran Thanksgiving Classic. The Tigers, ranked 10th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches' Poll and 12th by D3hoops.com, improved to 2-1, while the Leopards dropped to 0-2.
After leading by as many as 10 in the first half, La Verne took a 35-28 lead into the intermission. The Leopards briefly pushed the lead back to 10 in the opening minute of the second half, but scored 10 straight to tie the game at 38-38.
The Tigers took a 62-52 lead with 6:40 left in the game, but the Leopards scored seven consecutive to close to within three at 62-59 with just over four minutes left. The lead was still four before DePauw scored the game's final 11 points.
Katie Mathews led DePauw with a career-high 25 points and matched a career-best with eight assists, while Ellie Pearson matched a career-high with 15 points and grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds. Katie Aldrich added 12 points and Lauren Goff followed with 11.
Stephanie Shepard led La Verne with 12 pints, while Amanda Copas added 11. Clariissa Holz hauled down seven boards.
The Tigers shot 47.9 percent for the game including 61.8 percent in the second half, while the Leopards shot 40.4 percent. DePauw held a commanding 52-25 edge on the boards and grabbed 24 on the offensive glass which it converted into 26 second-chance points.
