#8 Tigers Drop 65-59 Decision at Millikin

December 8, 2010, Decatur, Ill. — Visiting DePauw attempted 27 more field goals than Millikin, but the Big Blue shot 55 percent from the floor and sent the Tigers to a 65-59 defeat. DePauw, ranked 8th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Poll and 10th by D3hoops.com, dropped to 5-2, while Millikin improved to 3-3.
DePauw quickly jumped out to a five-point lead, but the Big Blue scored nine straight to take the lead which they held the remainder of the first half and reached as many as 10. The Tigers closed the halftime gap to 29-23.
Katie Mathews scored six points and Ellie Pearson added five over the opening four minutes of the second half as the Tigers put together an 11-2 run and gained a 34-31 lead.
The Tigers still held a 42-40 lead after Mathews' jumper with 11:03 left, but Millikin scored six straight to gain a 46-42 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining.
In a half which included two ties and 12 lead changes, the Big Blue scored six straight capped by Julia Robert's three-pointer with 2:30 left which gave Millikin a 56-51 lead. DePauw's Katie Aldrich countered with a bucket, but Robert hit another three with 1:44 left to make it 59-53.
DePauw got as close as two at 61-59 on a pair of Mathews free throws with 19 seconds left, but Millikin hit all four free throws in the game's final 17 seconds.
Mathews led DePauw with 18 points, all of which came in the second half. Aldrich added 12, while Alex Gasaway hauled down nine rebounds.
Elise Wildman paced Millikin with 22 followed by Robert with 15, Crystal Zeigler with 13 and Nikki Tipsword with 10. Wildman led with seven rebounds.
DePauw held a 39-31 edge on the boards, but the Tigers grabbed 21 offensive boards. The Tigers shot just 27.8 percent in the first half, while Millikin topped 50 percent in each half.
