DePauw Rallies from Large Deficit, but Calvin Finishes Strong for Win

December 30, 2010, Elmhurst, Ill. — DePauw rallied from as much as a 16-point first half deficit to take a seven-point lead, but Calvin outscored the Tigers 31-6 over the final 11 minutes to take a 75-57 victory in the third-place game of the Elmhurst College Bluejay Classic. The Tigers dropped to 6-5 with the loss, while Calvin improved to 5-6.
Calvin scored the game's first six points and stretched the lead to 26-10 with 8:46 left in the half. Drew Wills knocked down a three and hit a jumper to start a 19-6 run which trimmed the Knights' halftime lead to 32-29.
The Knights pushed the lead back to seven at 44-37, but DePauw struck back with a pair of three-pointers from Sean Haseley. Pat Haggin knocked down a trey before Tommy Weakley hit a jumper and a three to cap a 14-0 run which gave the Tigers a 51-44 lead with 11:13 remaining. A 9-0 Calvin run gave them the lead for good and started a 31-6 stretch over the game's final 10:58.
Haseley led DePauw with 19 and earned a spot on the all-tournament team, while Wills followed with 11, while Ross Simpson dished out seven assists and Joe Bergfeld grabbed eight rebounds.
Bryan Powell, Danny Rodts and Tom Snikkers each scored 14 for Calvin, while Jordan Brink added 13 and Brad Schnyders 11 in the win. Rodts grabbed a game-high 10 boards for a double-double.
Calvin shot 50.9 percent for the game, while the Tigers hit just 35.6 percent. The Knights hit 60.9 percent in the second half to DePauw's 31 percent. Calvin also held a 38-29 rebounding edge.
DePauw returns to action on Sunday, January 2, when it hosts Centre at 3 p.m.
