Former VP Dan Quayle '69 Appears with Former President George H.W. Bush on Key Anniversary

89970January 21, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "No president was ever better served by his foreign policy team," former President George H.W. Bush said last night at Texas A&M University, where top members of his administration gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the beginning of Operation Desert Storm -- the operations to liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein. "There are not enough superlatives for me to describe them."

Bush was joined at the event by his vice president, Dan Quayle, a 1969 graduate of DePauw University (seen together in top photo: courtesy Houston Chronicle/Nick de la Torre).  Also on hand were former Secretary of State James A. Baker III; Gen. Colin Powell,89971 then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Dick Cheney, who was secretary of defense during Desert Storm; Gen. Brent Scowcroft, national security adviser at the time; and former Marine Corps Gen. Walter Boomer.

The conflict which began on January 17, 1991, about four months after Iraq invaded Kuwait.

"A few things I probably could have done better, but in the case of Desert Storm (the military name for the Gulf War), history will say we got this one right," Bush told the audience of approximately 3,500 gathered for the session.

The former president and his team also appeared together in an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, which can be viewed at the network's website.
