Seventh-ranked Tigers Split Doubleheader at Rhodes

March 19, 2011, Memphis, Tenn. — The seventh-ranked DePauw softball team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Rhodes College and came away with a doubleheader split. The Tigers dropped the first game, 5-2, and won the nightcap, 8-1. DePauw is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in SCAC play, while the Lynx are now 14-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game as Rachel MacBeth doubled and Brianne Weeks reached on an error. Jen Kosinski followed with a double, but those would be the only runs DePauw would score.
Rhodes plated three in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Amber Hunt and a two-run single from Megan Matthews. They added two more in the sixth as Allison Conn drove in a pair with a double.
Rhodes' Elise Suna was the lone player in the game with two hits as the Tigers totaled just three and the Lynx had seven. Sara Bowen improved to 9-1 with the win, while Emily Bichler dropped to 4-1.
In the nightcap, the Tigers collected an unearned run in the second before adding two in the third on an RBI single by Kosinski and a ground out from Emma Minx.
The lone Rhodes run came in the third as Matthews singled with two outs and Kelli Zomer followed with a double.
Five Tigers crossed the plate in the fourth as Brianne Weeks drove in one with a bases loaded single and Kosinski followed with a two-run single. Amy Hallett later brought home a pair with a two-out double.
Bichler improved to 5-1 with the three-hitter as she retired the last 10 she faced. Chelsea Peters suffered the loss. The Tigers totaled 12 hits as Kosinski led with three followed by MacBeth, Weeks and Jamie Story with two each.
The teams meet on Sunday in a Noon CDT doubleheader.Back
