Baseball Loses to Rhodes in 10

March 20, 2011, Memphis, Tenn. — For the second straight game the Tigers suffered a loss to Rhodes in the Lynx's last at bat as DePauw dropped an 8-7 decision in 10 innings. DePauw slipped to 7-11 overall and 0-3 in SCAC play, while the Lynx improved to 10-12 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
DePauw took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Rhodes sent the game to extra innings with three in the frame and won it with a single run in the bottom of the 10th.
The Tigers opened the contest with two in the first as Ben Gardner led off with a walk and stole second. Rob McPike singled Gardner to third and Jason Cohen walked to load the bases. Alex Wright followed with a sacrifice fly and Zach Galyean's single made it 2-0.
Rhodes came right back as Andy Meier led off with a homer. Stewart Martens singled and Lynden Pindling drew a walk before Matthew Burnick singled to load the bases. Chris Conkell was hit by a pitch and drove in Martens before Kyle Peterson reached on a fielder's choice allowing Pindling to score and giving the Lynx a 3-2 lead.
DePauw regained the lead in the second as Gardner drew a two-out walk and moved to second on Sam Swafford's single. McPike drove in Gardner with a single before Cohen doubled in Swafford. An error on the play allowed McPike to score and gave the Tigers a 5-3 advantage.
That lead reached 6-3 as McPike led off the seventh with a walk and stole second. Wright's single plated McPike. Rhodes countered in the bottom of the seventh as Meier reached on a bunt single and moved to third on a throwing error. Martens' squeeze bunt scored Meier.
Brendon Pashia led off the DePauw eighth with a single and moved to second on Chris Forbringer's sacrifice bunt. Pashia went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Gardner's double.
In the Rhodes ninth, Travis Perkins led off with a walk and moved to second when Meier was hit by a pitch. Martens singled home Perkins before Pindling scored Meier with a sacrifice fly. Conkell singled with two outs allowing Martens to score and tie the game at 7-7.
With two outs in the 10th, Perkins homered to right and gave Rhodes the win.
DePauw totaled nine hits led by McPike and Pashia with two each. Rhodes had 11 hits paced by Meier with three and two each from Martens and Burnick.
Jmaes Todd improved to 1-0 after pitching two innings of scoreless relief, while Erek Mounsey slipped to 0-1 after entering the game in the ninth.
The Tigers travel to LaGrange on Monday for a 4 p.m. contest.Back
