Greencastle and DePauw Again Featured in This Old House Magazine
August 24, 2011
August 24, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — The September 2011 issue of This Old House magazine, which is arriving on newssstands, again features Greencastle and DePauw University. The April 2011 edition of the magazine listed Greencastle as one of the Midwest's 15 communities where the "Best Old House Neighborhoods" can be found -- the only Indiana entry on the 2011 list. The new full-page feature lists Greencastle's atttributes as, "Home to DePauw University," "Beautifully crafted houses for less than $100,000," and "Small-town living at its best."
Carole Braden writes, "In the summer months, when trees are in bloom and DePauw University is on a more relaxed schedule, a walk along Greencastle's streets evokes a time when homeowners cut their grass with push mowers and television had yet to supplant front-porch views. The city of 10,000 gets plenty of 21st-century energy from the annual invasion of students, as well as the young professionals who commute to downtown Indianapolis, just 45 miles away."
The text notes that last year's average sale price for a home in Greencastle was just shy of $100,000. "Greencastle offers plenty of old-fashioned advantages: a town center that's been designated historic: an industrious American work ethic (a handful of plants here support the auto industry): a focus on community: and three new National Register Historic Districts, collectively comprising hundreds of (very affordable) homes."
