DePauw Drops Season Opener to 13th-ranked Hornets

101277September 2, 2011, Lynchburg, Va. — Host and 13th-ranked Lynchburg College scored six unanswered goals and topped DePauw by an 8-2 score in the season opener for the Tigers. The Hornets improved to 1-1 with the victory.

Deanna Smith gave Lynchburg a quick 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest on Lindsay Leonard's assist, but DePauw's Margaret Ellis (pictured) countered at 5:26 on a penalty stroke which evened the score at 1-1.

Kelli Williams put the Hornets ahead at 19:53 on Shelly Milks' assist before Leonard added an unassisted score at 24:09 and then assisted Katie Kline's score with just 2:42 left in the half to make it 4-1.

Smith, Williams and Heather Dodge each tallied unassisted goals to extend the lead to 7-1 before Ellis scored her second goal for the Tigers at 54:45 on Caroline Torie's assist. Leonard wrapped up the scoring just 23 seconds later with Kline assisting.

Lynchburg outshot the Tigers 23-10, while DePauw held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. The Tigers' Maggie Steele totalled eight saves, while Tiffany Frye and Hannah Myers each had two for the Hornets.

DePauw faces Washington College (Md.) tomorrow evening at Lynchburg.
