Tiger Baseball Team Opens with Win over Bears

St. Louis, Mo. - DePauw scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and the Tigers opened the 2012 baseball season with a 4-2 victory at Washington University.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second when Jason Cohen reached on an infield error and scored on Robbie Stein's one-out triple. Stein then scored when Sam Swafford struck out but reached on a catcher's error.
Washington evened the score in the fourth when Zack Kessinger's single to center scored Kyle Billig and Brandon Rogalski.
In the eighth, Alex Wright, Stein and Zach Starr each singled to load the bases. Swafford then drew a walk which scored pinch-runner Collin Henry and Alex Berlyn lifted a sacrifice fly to left which brought home Stein.
DePauw totaled eight hits with Stein leading the way with two and Starr adding a pair. Rogalski and Kessinger each had two of Washington's six hits.
Elliott Ross started for the Tigers and allowed just four hits in six innings before Alex Skroka, Joe Wojda and Hobs Donovan each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Wojda was credited with the win and Donovan the save. Ryan Furtick suffered the loss for the Bears.
The teams return to the field on Sunday for an 11 a.m. CST doubleheader.
