Newspaper Recalls Inauguration of President Clyde Wildman '13 75 Years Ago

March 11, 2012

The "Remember When" column in today's Evansville Courier & Press notes that on this day in 1937 the newspaper reported, "Dr. Clyde E. Wildman was formally inaugurated yesterday as president of DePauw University. In his address, Dr. Wildman deplored the speed of modern education." (President Wildman is seen at right in 1939 photo)

As the newspaper noted 75 years ago, Wildman, a 1913 DePauw graduate, stated, "We want to get our training quickly so that we may get on with the real business of living. But we have lost the ability to brood, to contemplate, and to ponder."
