Junior Tyler Perfitt is Second Goldwater Scholarship Winner
April 5, 2012
Tyler Perfitt, a junior at DePauw University, is the winner of a 2012 award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. A biology and Spanish double major with a minor in classical civilization, Perfitt is also an Information Technology Associate and is a member of the men's swimming and diving team.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
Perfitt becomes the second DePauw student this year to receive a Goldwater Scholarship, joining fellow junior Brad Wethington. Six DePauw students have won the awards in the past four years.
This spring, the Goldwater program awarded 282 scholarships for the 2012–13 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States, which will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Since its inception, the Foundation has bestowed more than 6,200 scholarships worth approximately $39 million.Back
