Tigers Put 16-game Win Streak on the Line Today

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw’s 17-1 field hockey team put its 16-game win streak on the line this afternoon when it hosts Ohio Wesleyan in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
Game time is set for 3 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the game ($5 adults, $3 children 18 and under) and students at NCAC institutions are admitted free with their student ID.
The Tigers are seeded first in the tournament after winning the regular season title with a 14-0 mark, while the Battling Bishops (10-7 overall) are the fourth seed after finishing 8-6 in NCAC play. DePauw finished lost to Denison in last year's championship contest in the Tigers' inaugural year in the conference.
DePauw enters with the best goals against average in Division III at 0.49 and leads the nation with 13 shutouts, while its .944 winning percentage is tied for second.
The Tigers have faced the Battling Bishops twice this season. In the first meeting, the Tigers took a 1-0 overtime victory and had a 31-0 advantage in shots and a 23-0 margin in corners. DePauw’s leading scorer, Margaret Ellis found the back of the cage off of Maggie Campbell’s assist with 4:21 left in the first extra session.
It took until the 53rd minute for the Tigers to score in their second meeting against Ohio Wesleyan. After several deflections, Caroline Torie finally settled the ball before putting it into the goal. Campbell scored off of Paige Henry’s assist just minutes later. The Tigers held a 23-1 advantage on shots, though only five were on goal.
In just three seasons with DePauw, Ellis has broken career scoring records set 25 years ago and now has 73 goals and 166 points in her three seasons. Her 25 goals this season ranks second in school history behind the record of 32.
With sophomore Maggie Steele tending goal, the DePauw defense has notched 13 shutouts this season. Steele has 16 saves and has allowed nine goals and her 0.49 goals against average is second in the nation. She also broke the NCAC record in individual shutouts.
Freshman Montana Knapp is the leading scorer for the Battling Bishops with 26 points including 12 goals and two assists and 82 shots. Karson Stevenson has three shutouts for the Bishops this season. Stevenson has 67 saves on the season and a save percentage of 0.736. She has a goals against average of 1.39 on 205 shots.
The winner of today’s game will go on to play the winner of the other semifinal contest, Wooster at Denison. The NCAC championship game is slated for Saturday on the campus of the higher seeded team.
