DePauw School of Music Hosts Inaugural Honor Band Program This Weekend
January 10, 2013
The Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts will be the site of the inaugural DePauw University Honor Band program this Saturday and Sunday, January 12–13. Several Indiana high schools, including Cathedral, Center Grove, Edgewood, Greencastle, Pike and Triton Central, will be represented in what DePauw School of Music hopes to make an annual tradition.
Area band directors nominated worthy high school students for this opportunity and DePauw School of Music faculty selected top DePauw students to serve as mentors and co-performers in the new program. In addition to daily ensemble rehearsal, master classes and workshops will be offered over the two-day event, which will culminate in a public performance in Kresge Auditorium on Sunday at 3 p.m. conducted by Craig Paré, director of DePauw University Bands.
Dr. Paré has selected five works for the inaugural concert: the lively “Flourish for Wind Band” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; “The Promise of Living” from American composer Aaron Copland’s opera The Tender Land; Alleluia Laudamus Te by Alfred Reed, featuring the beautiful J. Stanford Smith concert organ; “The Florentiner” by Hungarian bandmaster Julius Fucik, composed in the “grand marcia Italiana” style and edited by the eminent American conductor Frederick Fennell; and the third movement from Symphony for Band by DePauw School of Music faculty member James A. Beckel, Jr.
"These students excel in their respective high school band programs," says Paré. "I am excited about the opportunity to work with them, and I believe they will enjoy this chance to rehearse and perform top-level wind literature alongside colleagues of theirs from other schools."
General admission tickets to the DePauw Honor Band concert are $5. Children under 12, all students, and seniors over 65 are free. For additional information about the concert, contact Dr. Paré at firstname.lastname@example.org. Tickets may be purchased online at www.depauw.edu/music/tickets, or at the Green Center box office, beginning one hour prior to the performance. Regular GCPA box office hours will resume on January 28.Back
