Fourth-seed Allegheny Blanks Top-seed DePauw in NCAC Tourney Opener

Greencastle, Ind. - With the help of Maureen Pallone's five-RBI performance and the shutout pitching of Caitlin Nealer, fourth-seed Allegheny advanced in the North Coast Athletic Conference softball tournament winner's bracket with an 8-0 win over top-seed DePauw.
The Gators improved to 19-17 and face the winner of the Kenyon-Wittenberg game later today. DePauw dropped to 21-16 and takes on the loser of the Kenyon-Wittenberg contest in an elimination game this afternoon.
Allegheny took a 2-0 lead in the second when Halea Hayden led off with a double and Katrina George walked. Nicole Rodi drew a two-out walk and Pallone delivered a two-run double to left.
The Gators broke the game open with a five-run fifth. Belle Mazurik led off with a single before Stephanie Fort reached on a sacrifice bunt as the Tigers tried to make the play on Mazurik at second. Hayden walked to load the bases and George lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Mazurik. Nealer's base hit just over third plated Fort before Pallone clubbed a three-run homer to left center.
In the fifth, George walked and moved to second on Nealer's sacrifice bunt. Rodi singled George to third before Pallone walked to load the bases. Sadie Stuart singled home George to make it 8-0.
Mazurik and Pallone each had two of Allegheny's eight hits, while Haleigh Chasteen totaled two of the Tigers' four hits.
Nealer improved to 16-13 with the four-hit shutout and struck out six along the way. Emily Bichler dropped to 7-6 with the loss.
