Season Comes to an End for #13 Tigers after Close Battle with #12 Bears

marshall claire ncaa vs washuSt. Louis, Mo. - In a battle of two evenly matched teams, the 13th-ranked Tigers dropped a 5-4 decision to 12th-ranked Washington University in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Third Round.

The Tigers finished the season at 19-8, while the Bears improved to 16-7 and advanced to the national quarterfinals.

DePauw took a 2-1 lead after doubles as the Tigers' number-one tandem of Meg Crowley and Claire Marshall topped Kate Klein and Corinne Rauck, 8-4. The Bears' Aly Coran and Jamie Silverburg knotted the match with an 8-5 victory over Kaitlin Pickrel and Julie Wittwer at the number-three spot before DePauw's Caroline Emhardt and Maggie MacPhail defeated Hanna Newstadt and Theresa Petraskova, 8-5, at number two.

Coran evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wittwer at fourth singles before Klein topped Crowley at third singles 6-4, 6-1 and Petraskova beat MacPhail at number one 6-4, 6-3.

DePauw tied the match at 4-4 as Taylor Mahr took a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Newstadt at fifth singles and Marshall defeated Silverberg 7-5, 6-3 at number two.

The match then came down to sixth singles where Paige Madara took the first set from Elizabeth Young 6-0, but had to battle back from a deficit in the second to win 7-6 (7-4).

MacPhail will represent the Tigers in singles at the NCAA Championships hosted by Kalamazoo College, May 23-25, while Crowley and Marshall will compete in doubles.
