November 1, 2013
Greencastle, Ind. - Five first-half goals helped the Tigers make quick work of Wittenberg in Friday’s North Coast Athletic Conference game. DePauw added a second-half goal defeating the visiting Tigers 6-1.
With the victory DePauw improved to 15-4 overall and 13-1 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg dropped to 8-11 overall and 6-8 in NCAC play. The share of the NCAC title is DePauw's third championship in as many years of conference play as the Tigers shared the 2011 crown and won last year's title outright.
DePauw got on the board early when Paige Henry scored on an assist from Grace Goodbarn in just the fifth minute. Goodbarn added a goal two minutes later on a pass from Chelsea Cutler. With 12:22 on the clock Addie Ball added to the Tiger lead when she knocked in a pass from Grace Fisher.
Henry tallied her second goal of the half on an unassisted strike with 15:10 on the clock. The Tigers closed out the first-half scoring when Maddie Lee added an unassisted goal in the 19th minute.
Entering the second half DePauw kept up the offensive pressure when Henry notched her third goal of the day scoring on a pass from Cutler in the 39th minute. The visiting Tigers were able to get on the scoreboard when Beth Warning blasted home a goal off Eva van Dijkman’s penalty corner with 67:50 on the clock.
DePauw outshot Wittenberg 21-2 and held a 13-5 edge on penalty corners. Wittenberg goalie Sarah Brownell made 10 saves in a losing effort.
With a 13-1 NCAC record DePauw has clinched at least a share of the NCAC regular season title. They will host a first-round match of the NCAC postseason tournament Wednesday, November 6. Check the DePauw Athletics site later this weekend for updated schedule information.Back
