Two Own Goals Doom Tigers
November 2, 2013
Granville, Ohio - Two own goals proved to be the difference in DePauw’s 2-0 loss against the Denison Big Red Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Tigers dropped to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Denison improved to 9-7-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the NCAC.
Denison applied early pressure totaling six shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. With 14:42 on the clock the Tigers were attempting to clear a ball from their defensive zone when the ball was inadvertently headed off goalie Emma Cooper before deflecting off the post and into the goal. This own goal would prove to be enough to doom the Tigers.
Another unfortunate mishap fell on the Tigers in the 25th minute when a Denison crossing pass deflected off the back of a DePauw defender and found the back of the net. The Big Red kept the 2-0 lead for the rest of the half and the game.
DePauw picked up the intensity in the second half, outshooting Denison 10-6. However, the Tigers could not break through and cut into the Big Red’s lead. Overall, Denison outshot the Tigers 17-12 and held a 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
The Tigers will travel to Allegheny Wednesday, November 6, for their first round match of the NCAC tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.Back
