November 8, 2013

326A6502Greencastle, Ind. - After last season’s magical run the DePauw women’s basketball team has been voted preseason number one in the USA Today Coaches poll and the D3hoops.com poll. The Tigers received all eight first place votes in the coaches’ poll and 20 of the 25 first place votes in the D3hoops poll.

DePauw finished an impressive 34-0 last year and won their second NCAA Division III championship in the last seven years. Their undefeated campaign was just the seventh unbeaten season in Division III history and the Tigers set a record with 34 total victories.

Head coach Kris Huffman was named Division III Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association after capturing her second national title. Additionally, Huffman was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

In addition to a national title the Tigers grabbed their second straight North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship. DePauw returns 14 letterwinners and three starters from last year’s team including D3hoops.com Third Team All-America forward Alex Gasaway. Gasaway led the Tigers with 12.9 points per game and hit 53.3 percent of her field goal tries. She was also second on the squad with 5.8 rebounds per game.

The Tigers open the 2013-14 campaign Friday, November 15, when they travel to Franklin, Ind. to take on Otterbein at the Franklin Tip-Off Classic. The contest is scheduled for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
