Tigers Sweep Season Openers

Memphis, Tenn.- DePauw opened the 2014 season at Rhodes College with a pair of wins as the Tigers defeated Rhodes, 8-3, and followed that with a 9-1 victory over Maryville (Tenn.).
In the opener against Rhodes, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead behind sophomore catcher Sammi Bell's two-run double. The Lynx answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second.
Linsey Button's double in the third scored Taylor Golden and pushed DePauw's lead to 3-1 and the Tigers added three more in the fourth when Lauren Krumwiede doubled to center scoring two and Haleigh Chasteen followed that an RBI single.
DePauw added two insurance runs late in the contest to its their lead to 8-1. The Lynx attempted added two in the bottom of the seventh, but their rally was cut short.
Kahla Nolan picked up the win striking out six and walking just one. Golden went 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the victory.
Maryville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second, but the Tigers responded in the top of the fourth when Bell reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Haleigh Chasteen from third.
The Tigers exploded for eight runs in the fifth as they sent sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning highlighted by Hailey Freres’ two-run homer. Andi Sarkisian, Chasteen, Button, and Bell all added RBIs in the inning.
Chasteen picked up the win, giving up just four hits in the five-inning contest, shortened due to the run rule. Seven different Tigers collected at least one hit in the win.
DePauw is back in action when it takes on Maryville and Rhodes in a split doubleheader starting at Noon Central time.Back
