Novelist Michael Hainey Visits Campus on April 2
March 23, 2014
Michael Hainey, deputy editor of GQ and author of the novel After Visiting Friends: A Son’s Story, will come to the campus of DePauw University on Wednesday, April 2. Hainey will present a reading at 4 p.m. in Watson Forum, located within DePauw's Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media. Presented by the James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series, the event is free and open to all.
Published last year by Scribner, After Visiting Friends was a nominee for the Goodreads Choice Award for 2013's best memoir. The book book chronicles Hainey’s decade-long search for the truth about his father’s death.
"He sets up his book as a detective story," wrote Louisa Thomas in the New York Times. "The mood is grim, foreboding. ('Careful where you step' is one characteristic line.) He hunts for evidence, conducts interviews, tracks down his father’s friends and spends years trying to crack their code of silence. He visits his father’s old haunts and tries to reconstruct a lost culture."
A graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Hainy previously worked at Spy magazine.
The James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series was established in 1998 with gifts from Marilou Morrell Kelly, a 1955 graduate of DePauw. Learn more about the Kelly Writers Series by clicking here.Back
