Aliza Frame '05 Offers Advice for International Students

September 18, 2014

LGL 7053"International students should create copies and files for their immigration documents and spend time learning what they mean, says Aliza M. Frame, director of international student services at Indiana's DePauw University," notes a U.S. News & World Report article, "Timeline: Steps for International Students Starting at a U.S. College."

"When it comes to immigration, your documents are your life," Frame, a 2005 graduate of DePauw, tells the publication. "It can be really stressful to get a replacement."

She also urges international students to get to know faculty members. "Visit each of your professors at office hours," she says. "International students tend to come from a culture where there is a more formal relationship with faculty, and in the U.S. the expectation is they seek out their faculty members."

Frame also recommends that international students become active in campus organizations. "Students need to find ways they can connect with other students around topics they are generally interested in," Frame -- who majored in conflict studies and Spanish -- tells U.S. News.

The piece also quotes administrators from Grinnell College, the University of Michigan and Benedictine University.
