Tim Scott '66 Authors Ben Hogan: The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew

Tim Scott, a 1966 graduate of DePauw University, has authored Ben Hogan: The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew.  It has been published by Triumph Books.

An article in the Tribune Chronicle of Warren, Ohio, notes that Scott "began working in sales for the Hogan company in 1969 after graduating from DePauw University in Indiana and then earning an advanced degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. From 1974 through 1982 he was assistant to the president of the Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company. During those years, Scott developed a friendship with Hogan. He saw a side of the man that most people -- professional golfers included -- never witnessed."

"The purpose of the book was to show people his non-public side," Scott, a mathematics major at DePauw, tells the newspaper. "He was a very private man. A lot of that was due to the fact his father committed suicide. That was a deep, dark secret that he kept private. His wife didn't find out about it until after they were married. That's one of the reasons why he shied away from the press originally. He didn't like anyone asking him about his family."

Hogan, who died in 1997 at age 84, is considered one of golf's all-time greats.  He is tied with Gary Player for fourth on the all-time list with nine career professional major championships and is one of only five golfers to have won all four major championships currently open to professionals.

Mike McLain writes, "The book was Scott's first venture into serious writing. He began the project in 1992 and finished it in 2013. It is heavily researched and includes stories and background information gathered from approximately 50 people that knew Hogan on some level ... Among those Scott relied on was the late Ken Venturi, who became a close friend of Hogan's. He was one of the few close friends Hogan had with other players on the PGA Tour. "

The article is available to subscribers at the newspaper's website.  The book can be purchased at Amazon.com.
