2016 Commencement DVD, Showing Every Graduate and Loaded with Extras, Available for Pre-Order
January 29, 2016
DePauw University's 177th commencement will be a day to remember for members of the Class of 2016 and their families and friends, and those memories can be revisited with a DVD of the event. Again this year DePauw will produce a limited edition, professionally replicated disc. It will include the Sunday, May 22, ceremony in multi-camera coverage and digital sound, and will show each graduate crossing the stage and receiving their DePauw diploma.
The DVD will also offer a range of bonus materials and is now available for pre-order. The cost is $19.95 for the first disc; additional DVDs sent to the same address will be $8 each (shipping to domestic addresses is included; 7% sales tax will be added to Indiana orders).
An online order form is available here.
The 177th annual commencement will take place on Sunday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m. in Holton Memorial Quadrangle. Details on commencement weekend are available by clicking here.
With the disc, users can access a particular part of the program immediately via the DVD's menu. For example, to see a graduate whose last name is Smith, you'd click on the letter 'S' in the menu and are immediately taken to the first person whose last name begins with the letter 'S' receiving his or her diploma. Users can also jump to specific speeches, or watch the program from beginning to end. (at left: front cover of 2015 commencement DVD)
The DVDs are professionally replicated, not duplicated, and are housed in a decorative jacket.
Besides the main program, the disc will contain bonus features that amount to a four year recap of some of the memorable experiences the graduates have had while at DePauw. There will be campus highlights from 2012-16 (ranging from clips of the opening convocation at which the Class of 2016 was welcomed to DePauw and Ubben Lecturers such as Jane Goodall, Andrew Luck, Jimmy Kimmel [seen at right in Kresge Auditorium], Dan Quayle '69, Carl Bernstein, Martin Luther King III, Piper Kerman and Ron Paul); a photo gallery of commencement day activities; "Monon Memories" of the last four football battles with Wabash College for the prized Monon Bell; and vintage film from the DePauw Archives.
"In addition to capturing a special day in a format that can be easily used, the disc is designed to be a yearbook of sorts for the graduating class," notes Ken Owen '82, executive director of media relations, who puts the project together. "We literally start building components for the DVD on the day a new class arrives on campus. The hope is that this gives our graduates and their families a way to revisit their DePauw memories for many years to come."
DePauw has produced a commencement DVD each year since 2002; this will mark the 15th commencement DVD and the 39th DVD overall. Past projects include 20 Monon Bell Classics (1977, 1984, 1993, 1994 and 2000-15), some of which remain available here (supplies are very limited of several games). Also available are DVDs of past commencement ceremonies via this link.
