Acclaimed Violinist Hilary Hahn Joins Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for Sunday Concert at DePauw

October 3, 2016

One of the world's best violinists, three-time Grammy Award-winner Hilary Hahn, will debut at the DePauw University Green Center for the Performing Arts as guest soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, October 9.  The concert begins at 3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.

Following her Saturday night appearance at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis, Hahn will reprise her performance of the ravishingly lyrical Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major in Greencastle. The DePauw School of Music is equally honored to have the ensemble’s internationally applauded music director Krzysztof Urbański conduct the all-Prokofiev program on this Sunday’s Green Guest Artist Series concert.

Joshua Kosman, classical music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote of the Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, “I know of no violinist today with quite her combination of technical brilliance, interpretive assurance and sheer tonal splendor.”

In the two decades since her professional debut, the 36-year-old Hahn has brought her virtuosity, expansive interpretations and creative repertoire choices to diverse global audiences having performed with almost every leading orchestra in the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, along with the symphony orchestras of London, Chicago and Singapore, among many others.

Hahn took her first lessons in the Peabody Institute’s Suzuki program shortly before her fourth birthday. From age five, she studied with the Soviet-born, Odessa native Klara Berkovich, who had perfected a pedagogical method for teaching children from ages as young as four. A true child prodigy, Hahn was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music at age ten and began her recording career at 16. She has since released 15 albums on the Sony as well as the Deutsche Grammophon labels, in addition to three DVDs, an Oscar-nominated movie soundtrack, and an award-winning recording for children.

“Hilary Hahn is an extraordinary musician who I have followed closely since her professional debut. Her solo Bach album is one of my favorite recordings of all time,” says Ayden Adler, dean of the DePauw School of Music. “We couldn’t be more proud to present her artistry in concert with the Indianapolis Symphony to the Greencastle community.”

Now in his sixth season with the ISO, since the popular Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański last took the stage at the Green Center in April 2014, his list of international appearances has expanded to include a growing portfolio of debuts with such prestigious ensembles as the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic, as well as covering, on short notice, for the great German conductor Christoph von Dohnányi with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall in December 2014.

The ISO’s music director has selected Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 (“Classical Symphony”) and Suite from Romeo and Juliet to be performed with the virtuosic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra on Sunday’s all-Prokofiev program.
