Richard Peck '56 to Keynote Southampton Children's Literature Conference

Richard Peck 6.gifFebruary 25, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - Richard Peck, Newbery Medal-winning author for young people and 1956 graduate of DePauw University, will be the keynote speaker at the first-ever Southampton Children's Literature Conference. The event, presented by Stony Brook Southampton's Master of Fine Arts Program in Writing and Literature, will take place July 9-13, reports the East Hampton Star.

"Other confirmed faculty members include Mitchell Kriegman, who created and produces Bear in the Big Blue House and Clarissa Explains It All for television, the authors Gregory Galloway and Tor Seidler, and Cindy Kane, a book editor," notes the newspaper. "Gahan Wilson, a New Yorker cartoonist and children's book illustrator, will also participate and has designed posters for this year's events. Jules Feiffer, a faculty member, designed artwork for the conference brochures. "

The Washington Post calls Richard Peck "America's best living author for young adults." He received the National Humanities Medal in 2002 and was honored last year with the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Award for Literature. He has authored more than 30 books, including the 2001 Newbery Award-winner A Year Down Yonder.
