October 29, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — James Oblinger, a 1967 graduate of DePauw University, is one of five finalists to become the next president of New Mexico State University. Dr. Oblinger is a professor and former chancellor of North Carolina State University.
"This is an outstanding group, any of whom could easily lead this university," says Chris Erickson, a member of New Mexico State's faculty senate and a member of the presidential search committee. "We had a deep bench to pull from."
All five finalists will visit the campus in the coming weeks," writes Amanda L. Husson in the Las Cruces Sun-News. "The finalists will be on campus throughout the month of November, with a final decision expected
Nov. 19."
The story notes, "Oblinger is a professor of food, bioprocessing and nutrition sciences at North Carolina State University. Since coming to the university in 1986, he has served as chancellor, provost and executive vice chancellor, dean, and associate dean and director for academic programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
